Buttermilk and Kinkaid sustain MAJOR damage from tornado
UPDATE Jan 7th, 2007: The Kinkaid trail between the Crissenberry Dam and the Buttermilk picnic area (just down from the old private road) is now CLEAR. SMBA volunteers cleared the trail on Sunday Jan 7th all the way to the famous swimming area. So go out and ride!
For those of you who don't know, or don't live around here, one of the local favorites, the Kinkaid trail system, is suffering from major storm damage. On September 22nd, a couple wicked twisters roared thorough southern Illinois leaving behind a destructive path of carnage. One F2 tornado whipped across Kinkaid, leveling thousands of trees. Most of the buttermilk trail is now impassible. As a matter of fact, it down right dangerous traversing the land for fear of falling limbs (i.e. widow makers), so I recommend saying away from this area for the next few months at least. damage1
more damage The good new is that the forest service is not "writing-off" this trail system. I've been receiving updates on their progress, and it looks like they are moving along quite nicely. I wouldn't be surprised that most of our trails will be safe and clear by thanksgiving, so keep your eye out for updates.

Here's the latest update from Kelly at the USFS, "just to update you on our progress: we should have Waterfall Trail cleared completly through at the end of the day on Tues. (10-10), Kinkaid Lake Trail heading back to Hidden Cove will take probably another day. The next step will be taking care of the trees from Crissenberry Dam to Buttermilk Rec Area. The final big step is tackling Buttermilk TH to Buttermilk Rec Area. That work will be really, really dangerous so it will take a while to get it cleared up. Please let folks know we are working towards getting the trails opened safely for them."
Thank you FS for working on this!!
